Writing is often viewed through a lens of creativity and expression, a space where many voices can emerge, and stories can be told. Yet, beneath the surface lies a profound responsibility that every writer must grapple with. The question of where this responsibility begins invites a deeper exploration of the role of writer or storyteller.
As the publication date of my novel draws near, preparing its debut into the world, I find myself wrestling with– did I do enough? Are the words that sprang forth from within me ones that will create a desire for more profound thought and conversations that are more than those that skim the surface?
The Privilege of Voice
It is my personal belief that writing is, above all, a rare and precious gift. Not everyone has the chance to articulate their thoughts or ideas through the written word. Throughout history, many voices have been stifled by cultural norms, stigmas, language barriers, and lack of education. This scarcity of the privilege of writing underscores the unique position of those who possess it.
In this context, however, writers must recognize their position: those who are given the gift of writing and writing well–can influence, inspire, and provoke thought. This privilege carries weight; it grants us the power to shape narratives and emotions, challenge the status quo, encourage, uplift, spread truth, and connect with others worldwide regardless of race, culture, or class.
As writers navigate their world of words, whether non-fiction, history, fiction, fantasy, self-help, romance, or any topic in between, I have found that engaging in self-reflection and continued internal dialogue is crucial. Embracing the responsibility of writing is not just crafting the best story, weaving the best plot, or having the best character arc. It is a willingness to learn, adapt, and even apologize when necessary. It is the deep understanding that writing is not just an act of creation but also an effort that can uplift or harm.
In Conclusion
Ultimately, the responsibility and privilege of writing is an intricate dance of balance. It begins with recognizing the power of words and the impact they can have on the individual. As a writer, I know that I must embrace this duality, using my voice not only to create stories that entertain but also ones that advocate for truth, understanding, and connection. As the days draw near and anxious thoughts of all the what-ifs continue their barrage against me, I am reminded that no one said that this journey was not going to be easy but I can continue to stand in the belief that my privilege to write can be a force for truth, reminding me that with every word I write, has the potential for impact.
Yesterday is unchangeable; tomorrow is unknown. In the moments I have today, I will cherish this gift given to me and praise the Creator whose love knows no bounds and whose wisdom is immeasurable.
